Considering the value addition provided, we have recommended the use of StarQuery across the entirety of CIMIC group.

Mr. Shane Whelan, Applications Manager, Thiess

Thiess’ Situation

Thiess was in search of a solution to simplify their method of querying their Oracle database and wanted to cut their technology costs in the process. Over 3,000 users accessed their JD Edwards web client via Citrix to run ad-hoc queries and reports and were regularly requesting bulk data downloads into Excel for analysis. Thiess struggled to keep up with the constant change in report requirements and the pace at which requests were being made.

Issue: Simplifying Query Creation and Data Extraction while Cutting IT Costs

Before Theiss began using StarQuery, they were running queries from both Oracle and JD Edwards databases and needed to simplify the process for their end users to be able to obtain the data they needed while automatically distributing the reports to supervisors at multiple sites.

Being a company with very diverse business units, Thiess had unique requirements and business streams. The highly dynamic environment resulted in constantly changing requirements and demanded speed in the delivery of required reports. Thiess also wanted to be able to better handle requests for bulk data downloads into Excel while cutting IT spending simultaneously.

Solution Presented by Symtrax

StarQuery MapDesigner provides administrators with the ability to choose the tables and fields that will be extracted from each database. This provides the ability to extract only the necessary data for each query.

StarQuery for Excel provides end users with the ability to create their own queries from the data mapping. They now have a simple method for developing their own queries, with no help from the IT department, by using the drag and drop interface.

StarQuery Runtime provides a simplified platform for all end users, regardless of their training or background. With this module, anyone can update predefined queries, with just the click of a button, to get the most current information available.

Architecture of StarQuery Suite

Benefits

The addition of StarQuery provided a much needed simplification to the data extraction process for end users. Now, Thiess’ employees can create their own reports and execute queries and data downloads without the assistance of IT. It has also allowed for developers to focus on common reports between divisions.

StarQuery’s integration with Excel provided a familiar and friendly interface for end users to maximize their existing knowledge of the program. Also, pre-established super user groups could now provide support within their business units. Most importantly, the increase in report delivery time and the reduction in the effort required to create the reports initially has reduced Thiess’ IT costs considerably.

StarQuery Suite has been in use for over 9 years and has been operational through a number of IT system changes at Thiess.

Highlights

  • Simplified mapping of data
  • Combine data coming from multiple data sources into one source with ease
  • User friendly query creation for IT or end users
  • Simplified interface for end users who need to run the same queries frequently
  • Saves both time and money for the IT department
