As e-invoicing continues to gain momentum across the UK, Ireland and Europe, one term is appearing more often: Peppol. But what exactly is it, how does it work, and why is it becoming such an important part of the e-invoicing conversation?
At its core, Peppol is about interoperability. It provides a common framework that allows businesses, public bodies, service providers and different financial systems to exchange structured electronic documents without requiring a separate connection for every trading partner.
With the UK moving towards mandatory VAT e-invoicing from 2029 and Peppol set to play a central role in its future interoperability framework, understanding how the network works is becoming increasingly important. Ireland also already has an established Peppol infrastructure within the public sector, alongside its wider move towards structured e-invoicing through VAT Modernisation.
In this session, we will break Peppol down into practical terms and explore:
- What Peppol is, and what it is not
- Why interoperability is so important for e-invoicing
- How the Peppol four-corner model works
- The role of Access Points and structured invoice standards
- How an invoice moves from one business system to another through Peppol
- How Peppol fits alongside tax reporting and country-specific requirements
- What the growing adoption of Peppol means for businesses in the UK and Ireland
Join Ellen Leith, Founder and CEO of Purchase to Pay Network (PPN) and Founder of the UK eInvoicing Advocacy Lab (UKeLab), who will host the session, alongside Mihir Verma, UK Solution Consultant at Symtrax, and Peppol expert Didier Lombard, as they unpack the technology and concepts behind Peppol and explore why it is becoming an important building block for the future of e-invoicing.
